HOW JOAN MELLEN MADE A WITNESS DISAPPEAR
![]() |
Clinton, Louisiana courthouse |
A: Right away. I noticed -- I heard it pull off, I didn't pay no attention to it, it was gone.
Q: When did this individual come to your home?
A: Had it figured out as the latter part of August or either the first part of September, because I made no dates or no memorandums or nothing on it.
Q: Was this in 1963?
A: '63, 1963.
…
Q: Tell the Court what you told Lee Harvey Oswald that day that you talked to him in your home.
A: I told him that I could not help him get a job at the hospital ahead of any of my constituents, at the East Louisiana State Hospital, but I was not going to try to prevent him from getting a job, and I told him all the procedures he would have to go through to get in position to get a job, about going and putting in his application and getting set up to take a Civil Service examination, and that you just didn't go over there and get a job and just go to work, you had to go through applications and take a Civil Service examination for a job in the electrical department or something like that. They did have some jobs over there maybe, but I didn't tell him all that, but to get into the electrical department or maintenance you had to have a Civil Service exam, and -- he was from New Orleans -- it wouldn't hurt if he was a registered voter up there, and I told him that I knew a fellow up there once trying to find out what he can from everybody around there, and I told him I knew a fellow up there whose first name was Oswald and I asked him was he any kin to him.
Q: I take it then that the conversation that you had with Oswald was pertaining to a job at the
A: That was practically all we discussed.
Q: And approximately how long did you say you talked to Oswald that day?
A: Well, it wasn't too long, I would say maybe 20 minutes or 25, just talked along there. I wasn't wanting him to get the impression I was trying to rush him off or nothing.
Q: Was anybody at home when Oswald was at your house, besides yourself?
A: Yes, sir, my daughter was there.
Q: Anybody else?
A: I don't remember whether my wife was there or not; I do know my daughter was there though, but I never could place whether my wife was there at the time or not.
Morgan doesn’t mention a car at all or any witness other than his daughter, Mary, who was later interviewed by Andrew Sciambra, Garrison’s lead investigator, on June 3, 1967. In his report dated January 29, 1968, he writes:
Morgan Renovated
However, Mellen relates more recent testimony – by Morgan and by his son, Van.
Without crediting Bill Davy’s fine book, Let Justice Be Done, where Van’s statement is first reported, Mellen describes the boy (age not given) sitting in a tree playing “Tarzan” at the time Oswald arrived in a black Cadillac. Mellen repeats one line from the Sciambra statement, saying that Mary “did not pay much attention to the whole situation.” By “the whole situation,” Mellen must mean the matter of the car(s) and its (their) occupant(s), because Mellen describes the young girl as “anxious to get a look at the young man.” Indeed, the line she leaves out is “didn't really pay much attention to the car” – a bit of fudging. More importantly, if Mellen asked the now grown-up Mary Morgan whether she wanted to retract her early statement to Sciambra about the old car and the young lady, she neglects to mention Mary’s response. Surely she is familiar with the testimony.
Mellen then adds to Mr. Morgan’s testimony:
“Morgan had made up his mind. ‘A smart aleck white boy who is a nigger lover appeared in a black Cadillac,’ Morgan said later. When Morgan went outside to see Oswald off, the Cadillac sped off so quickly that he was almost run over in his own driveway.”
“Morgan said later” raises three questions. When is “later”? To whom did he say this? And why didn’t he mention almost getting run over by a Caddy in his earliest statements and testimony? Checking the footnotes to this page, and counting down the lines, as the book’s odd footnoting format requires, reveals no source for this new information.
The main question of course is:
What happened to Mary Morgan?
How did her earlier, detailed statement about seeing the old car and the woman passenger disappear? You would think a book so painstakingly footnoted might include a citation, at the very minimum, of this second old car witness. Where is the explanation for her disappearance?
McGehee Renovated
While repopulating the Morgan scene, Mellen also retells the barber’s story:
“As he (Oswald) departs, McGehee, washing his hands, looks out the window. The green car is nowhere in sight. Suddenly a large black car with a big wraparound bumper pulls up from

David Ferrie, found dead... |
Indeed, it would seem imperative that Shaw and Ferrie both make sure not to be seen in Oswald’s company – that, in fact, they not be seen in each other’s company, much less showcased in a gaudy black Caddy.
The Oswald-Shaw-Ferrie link was supposed to be secret, wasn’t it? Instead, we get Oswald emerging from a vehicle containing two out-of-place-looking characters very much exposed to public view: a distinguished white-haired gentleman who actually tipped his hat to myriad passers-by, says Mellen, with an unforgettably weird-looking companion. If such a trip took place, it would have to be pretty important to risk anyone recognizing either or, worse, any two of these men.
(Note by JVB: The trip and experiment was planned in advance without the participants realizing that Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech had inspired a voter registration drive the next day at the Clinton courthouse, where the men in the Cadillac -- an official-looking vehicle that would look like an official part of the convoy to the hospital-- had to wait for a phone call from a payphone--no cell phones existed back then.)
{Note by JVB: Since this experiment was an anti-Castro effort, it would be logical that Lee Oswald would present himself to the hospital personnel as vehemently anti-Castro; this location was far from New Orleans, where he had recently been posing earlier as "pro" Castro.)
Why, at a time when he was clearly repainting himself red, would he revert to anti-Castro colors? If the idea was to set Oswald up, it would have made much more sense to continue the portrait in red that was begun in
As Mellen herself notes, CORE’s voter registration drive was getting daily press attention. “The
What work did he have in
Unlike Mellen, Haslam took the time to confirm for himself Baker’s independent knowledge of the underground labs at Sherman’s and Ferrie’s apartments.
But it gets sadder.
Indeed, according to Baker, it was she who supplied the lead to Mellen in a phone call she made to Mellen after Mellen failed to call her, as I repeatedly urged.
I could never account for this odd remark, except to surmise that she viewed witnesses as belonging somehow to their researchers, a troubling phenomenon I have encountered elsewhere in the research community – especially troubling as aging witnesses die one after another. In any case, I didn’t own Baker, and if, in any sense, I did, I was offering her to Mellen, asking for nothing in return. (Understand: I wasn’t writing a researcher’s book. I had only agreed to edit Baker’s memoirs. This forced me to do some research, but I had limited time for field work. I simply wanted to alert researcher Mellen to material I thought she should check out, especially as we live in the same general neighborhood, and especially as she was going to do more field work in Baker’s general neighborhood.)
The same is true for the role Bobby Kennedy may have played (according to Hemming, “Lee was one of Bobby’s boys”). Her account could be made to jibe with Baker’s without much difficulty, but she is so determined to edit everyone but the CIA out of the picture that she has the CIA being Ochsner's and Shaw's only sponsors. In fact, Ochsner was best buddies with Clint Murchison, and Baker was told that the cash for her project was funneled from
Russell is a "wealthy oil man" working undercover for Robert F. Kennedy. He swears under oath that he attended a 1964 meeting with Guy Banister, "known to me at the time as an employee of the CIA." The murder of Jack Ruby is planned by a method that will be "both undetectable and beyond suspicion of foul play."
How would she know?
Her ex-husband is Ralph Schoenstein, who was Russell’s secretary between 1961 and 1965, during which time he allegedly handled all of Russell’s correspondence. Small world!
Clearly, Schoenstein’s legal argument, which was victorious, throws a window of opportunity wide open for him to have missed a letter.

Abraham Bolden Speaks out About The Kennedy Detail
My book, Me & Lee tells how Lee Harvey Oswald was framed and blamed for Kennedy's death. Abraham Bolden's book, The Echo from Dealey Plaza, tells us how the Secret Service allowed Kennedy to be murdered, then blamed Kennedy for his own death!
Abraham Bolden's review of The Kennedy Detail is a must-read for anyone who thinks Kennedy had a death wish and ordered agents off his car, opening himself up to get gunned down. Researcher Vince Palamara backs up Bolden's statements, as well.
Here is Bolden's review of THE KENNEDY DETAIL. Don't miss it!
Judyth Vary Baker
This review is from: The Kennedy Detail: JFK’s Secret Service Agents Break Their Silence (Hardcover)
I just finished reading the 448 page “Cover Your Ass” book by agent Blaine. As a former Secret Service Agent and the first African American to be appointed to the White House Detail, I was dismayed at the continued attempts by former agents to deny culpability in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The attack upon my credibility in the book, “The Kennedy Detail” was expected; but I was hoping that the former Kennedy body guards would show a modicum of contriteness in the book instead of trying to blame Kennedy’s assassination on the President himself. Unlike the general reading public, I was an agent during the critical period on November 22, 1963. In my book, “The Echo from Dealey Plaza”, I relate to the public what I saw while serving on the white house detail and the disrespect and hatred towards the President that I heard expressed by some of my fellow agents.
Although, Blaine refers my claims of racism in the secret service white house detail in 1961 as being unfounded, on page 25 of my book, I document by secret service file memo 3-11-602-111 the stark racism that prevented me from carrying out my protective responsibilities in Miami Florida. Mr. Blaine also states in his “cya” book that Agent Faison, who was the first African American permanently, assigned to the White House Detail in 1963 took issue with my “unbelievable” charges of racism in the secret service. If there was no racism in the secret service in 1963 then how is it that just eight years ago, 57 African American Agents filed a class action suit, (that is still pending in federal district court) charging overt racism by the agency.(see http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=17358992)?
Blaine and other agents can feed the public with the “cya” account of the secret service actions during the Kennedy area but I was there and was a witness to the incompetence, laxity of certain agents surrounding the president, the drinking and cavalier attitude among many of the agents on the detail, the references to President Kennedy as being a Ni—r lover and their disdain for his stand for racial justice and equal opportunity for All Americans. I was present among a few agents who were discussing the protection of President Kennedy in which the statement was made that if an attempt were made on the life of the President, they would take no action.
Blaine states in his book that I said that I discussed the conduct of my fellow agents on the detail with Chief James Rowley. I make no such claim. On page 45 of The Echo from Dealey Plaza, I specifically state that I discussed the problems of Kennedy’s protection with Chief U. E. Baughman. I did not go to Rowley because I knew that he already knew of the conduct of the agents and would do nothing about it.
As far as agents being forbidden to ride on the special running boards of the presidential vehicle, that rumor was not circulated until “after” the assassination of the president. There was no official memorandum or other notification of such an order advising agents of this change in protective policy. This rumor is no more than a scandalous assertion put forth by agents who failed in their duty to properly protect the President of these United States.
Lastly, Blaine derides me concerning the Kennedy investigations that took place in Chicago during November, 1963; however, he has no knowledge of the chicanery that took place in the Chicago office of the secret service during that time. Unlike Blaine, I was there. I was there when in early November, 1963 the Chicago office of the secret service investigated a character named Echevarria. Echevarria stated that President Kennedy was about to be assassinated. I heard the investigating agent dictating the reports in early November, 1963. The investigation took place prior to the assassination in Dallas. On the afternoon of November 26, 1963, Inspector Kelly, SAIC James Burke, and representatives of the FBI had a meeting in the Chicago office of the secret service. Kelly and Burke were the lead investigators representing the secret service in Dallas prior to the assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald. The Echevarria investigation took place during the first two weeks in November. I was there in the office when the reports that had already been dictated by the investigating agents and typed by the secretaries were rounded up and banded in a single stack in the office of SAIC Martineau. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that these collected investigative reports were dictated by the agents PRIOR to the assassination of Kennedy. However, after Kelly and Burke ended their conference, these same reports were restructured and the dates of the investigation were changed to indicate that the Echevarria investigation was conducted AFTER the assassination and had reference to the concern for the protection of President Johnson as Blaine claims in his “CYA” book. I was there. I know what happened and Blaine may fool the general public, but he can’t fool me.
Blaine refers to me as the convicted felon and uses that phrase in an attempt to discredit me and my autobiography, The Echo from Dealey Plaza. I may well be a convicted felon but I sleep well at night knowing that I did everything that I could do to save the life of President Kennedy. Can the agents standing on the running board of the follow-up car in Dallas, Texas and watching the president’s head blown to pieces, say the same thing? I doubt it. They know the truth too.

MARTHA ROSE CROW DIED A YEAR AGO TODAY--AFTER DEFENDING ME!

LIFE ON THE RUN: Judyth Vary Baker and the Untimely Death of Martha Rose Crow
by Judyth Vary Baker and (the late) Martha Rose Crow (with Dr. James Fetzer)
Dr.James Fetzer wrote:
Martha Rose Crow, a social activist, poet and writer, was the closest friend of Judyth Vary Baker, the author of ME & LEE, which documents her relationship with Lee Harvey Oswald in New Orleans during the months prior to the assassination of JFK. Because of harassment and death threats since she began to speak out about their relationship , Judyth has lived life on the run ever since she began speaking out. Her dear friend, Martha, began receiving threats of her own soon after endorsing Judyth’s book.
She may have been murdered because of it.
About the same time Martha posted, “Judyth Vary Baker is my best friend!” on her multitude of blogs, “that’s when she started getting threats,” Judyth has told me. Mere hours after Martha complained that both she and Judyth had received “terrible death threats” and that she wasn’t feeling well, Martha collapsed for unknown reasons in a public market. She was not diagnosed with any heart attack symptoms during her brief hospitalization. Nevertheless, she died the same night due to a sudden and unexpected heart attack. She was in her early fifties, physically fit and in good health until she began complaining of feeing unwell just before her death.
THE BACKGROUND
It may be difficult to believe that someone like Martha might have been taken out because of her friendship with Judyth Vary Baker. We know, however, that Judyth’s story is one that the intelligence agencies of the United States’ government, especially the CIA but also the ONI and the FBI, do not want to become familiar to the public. Having invested so much time and effort to demonize Lee Oswald as “the lone, demented gunman,” Judyth’s story reveals that he was actually a sociable, intelligent and disciplined individual who appears to have had a long history of undercover operations with the government. He appears to have been recruited by the ONI, defected to the Soviet Union at the behest of the CIA, and served as an informant for the FBI.
Since I organized a research group consisting of the most highly-qualified individuals to ever investigate the death of JFK in 1992,[1] I have been fascinated to learn what Judyth has to tell us, which I find entirely credible. Our research, which has been published in three books and many articles, has exposed the use of fabricated evidence to frame Lee Oswald as the patsy and to create a false account of the causes of the death of our 35th president.[2]
MARTHA’S WEBSITE ENDORSEMENT
Perhaps the most important reason the intelligence community would be concerned about Martha is that her endorsement of Judyth’s book was strong and clear and forceful:
JUDYTH VARY BAKER IS MY BEST FRIEND!
HER WEBSITE IS HTTP://WWW.JUDYTHVARYBAKER.COM As Mistress to Lee Harvey Oswald, She Has A Great Story to Tell That Will Change History!
A few days before her death, Martha Rose Crow began writing an article about Judyth and Lee Harvey Oswald, which she intended to publish worldwide. It began this way:
He was twenty-three, she just nineteen when they first met in the romantic city of New Orleans. They soon fell in love. But there was one problem – he was on a mission to kill Castro, which would end with his involvement in the assassination of John F. Kennedy. .. Jim Marrs, whose book CROSSFIRE was a basis for Oliver Stone’s movie "JFK", wrote the afterword to Judyth’s book, Me & Lee. He wrote, “Can we ever learn the truth? Yes, by studying the wide array of information now available, thinking for ourselves, and listening to the impassioned, unflinching voice of Judyth Vary Baker.”
Martha ended the first part of her article by writing, “But Judyth, my best friend, has to live her life in exile.”[3]
Judyth Vary Baker: “I have to live in undisclosed locations. Why? Here’s an example: The History Channel, in their current Internet film “Kennedy Assassination Conspiracy Theorists” says I ‘claimed’ to have helped a top secret CIA team create AIDS! Now, who can walk safely down the street with that kind of lie hanging over them?”
Dr. James Fetzer:
(Regarding) this (History Channel) production[4] …take what you see there with a considerable grain of salt, since it is intended to discredit Judyth’s story, which is true, by surrounding it with unfounded theories and distorting Jim Garrison’s investigation, which would probably have resulted in a conviction but for the untimely deaths of key witnesses.
DR. FETZER THREATENED
At this point in the article, Martha Rose Crow had inserted “I want to talk about our death threats. Get me a copy of the Jim Fetzer Interview, to back us up.”
Dr. Fetzer had received his first death threat in over twenty years of exposing controversy and cover-up in the Kennedy assassination. The death threat arrived just after he created a blog for Judyth. Fetzer, when told of Martha’s death, said “The blog will stay up.”
Martha then wrote:
Baker says she regularly receives death threats. When Dr. James Fetzer interviewed her in February [2010] on “The Real Deal” in a rare, live session, Fetzer said,
" … one of the most convincing aspects of your life story in relation to with your association with Lee Oswald is the massive harassment to which you have been subjected. It’s been a veritable horror story."
JVB: "Yeah, it's been real fun."
JF: "’It’s been real fun!’ [laughing]. In fact, you've had to live in one country after another. Weird accidents and attempts have been made on your life. And I must tell you [that] to me, it was astonishing that, when I put up your blog, I received the first death threat I have ever received in about 20 years of doing research on JFK. It wasn't directly mentioning you but, I take it …"
JVB: "No, they wouldn't want to do that."
JF: "That would be too obvious, huh?"

THE HISTORY CHANNEL
In 2003 The History Channel aired a documentary about Judyth Vary Baker’s life story called “The Love Affair.” It was quickly banned along with the two other new documentaries in the popular series The Men Who Killed Kennedy. No less lights than Lyndon Johnson’s widow, two former presidents (Carter and Ford), Jack Valenti and Disney’s head honcho Eisner threatened lawsuits. However, the banned documentaries, including “The Love Affair,” are posted –and sometimes quickly removed --on YouTube.
Baker says she could have become wealthy simply by saying “Oswald did it.”
“But he was innocent,” she says, “and the world is finding that out, even though it means I lost my teaching career, my doctoral degree, and just about everything I had. There are people who hate me for speaking out.”
Two days after Martha and Judyth received death threats at the same time, and two days after she wrote these words in behalf of the woman she called her “best friend,” this beloved friend and mentor of thousands was dead.
But why did she die? The day of her death, Martha complained of symptoms that, in retrospect, resembled acute arsenic poisoning. She had mentioned drinking “jungle juice” that ‘tasted funny’ at a songfest several nights before, where there had been a large crowd. The second last day of her life, she wrote to Judyth that she drank some more “jungle juice” from the jug she was given, which she had brought home, complaining that she had abdominal pains and a headache.
The last day of her life, Martha complained to Judyth and several other friends by email of pain in one of her legs , in her belly, and that she had a fever.[5] She nevertheless went to an open market to shop for groceries, where she collapsed and was taken to a Dutch hospital. Though there for hours, nobody was informed. Records show she was treated for heart attack symptoms just before cardiac arrest. Then, before her family could stop it, Martha’s body was quickly cremated. Police opened a case, but with only ashes to analyze, nothing could be determined.
Martha’s last known words, written to her publisher, began with this chilling sentence: “Judyth and I are under harsh attack”:
Subject: Chapter 12 is going to be a couple days late
Date: Mon, 1 Mar 2010 07:07:40 -0800 (PST)
From: Martha Rose Crow
To: XXXXXXX
Judyth and I are under harsh attack. Our yahoo email accounts were hacked this weekend (mine longer than hers), her computer got hacked real bad last night (some people came over to help her and stayed up with her all night until it got fixed), she got a terrible death threat…[details of threat removed]….one of her big and famous supporters also got a terrible death threat, youtube took a video of her off minutes after it was posted and on and on...”
Martha had never previously received any death threats in Europe, where she had been living in exile for over eight years.
For Martha, the threats are now over. Thank God, she can rest in peace. We who knew and loved her will never forget her cheery “Hey!” -- her overwhelming kindness -- her dedication to peace, justice and truth. She was not afraid to do research into topics as varied as aliens, illegal torture by the US, and political ponerology.
Martha Rose Crow’s official website is here: http://www.martharosecrow.com/
Also see: http://hiddenmurder.blogspot.com/2006/09/americas-darkest-secret.html
Martha foresaw the economic crash and hard times across America and Europe; she reported on the early deaths of baby boomers, was concerned about FEMA camps, and deplored the torture of Iraqi prisoners. She educated people about Big Pharma and publicized problems with contaminated modern vaccines etc. long before they reached mainstream news. She was the enemy of darkness and evil. She died one year ago today.

[3] At this point, Martha asked for a quotation from her friend Judyth. The quote shown here has been updated to reflect Judyth’s current situation.
[4] The History Channel states that Judyth says she helped a lab create AIDS—without consulting with Judyth or caring about the impact this false assertion would have on her reputation or how it could affect her safety. [5]The fact that Martha ended up having a heart attack at the hospital also conforms to arsenic poisoning symptoms.
